Antibody genes linked to ethnicity

Scientists think they've found a link between antibody makeup and ethnicity--evidence that some ethnic groups may be more susceptible to certain diseases or respond to diseases differently than people of other backgrounds. Researchers at Canada's Simon Fraser University screened the chromosomes of 425 people of Asian, African and European descent for various DNA insertions and deletions and identified 11 possible large DNA insertions and deletions of antibody-encoding genes in the IGH-chain locus region that determine a person's antibody gene count and diversity, and have been associated with disease susceptibility. The discovery could help advance research into how IGH-related antibody genetic variation among different groups of people impacts their ability to fight viruses, from influenza to HIV. Release
